Default Contour Labels?

Hey, I have a subsurface geological formation mapped out that I have contoured and labled/annotated on Global Mapper. I want to export this map as a shape file to use in Accumap and Surfer, but for some reason, only the contour lines survive the exporting process and I lose my contour labels/annotations every time. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save labels on contour maps that will export to other programs from Global Mapper?
Thanks!
Robert

Robert,

The Shapefile format does not have any standard method of storing labels for features, but that information should be included as attributes for each exported feature. Your other application would then have to provide a method to select an attribute to use as a display label.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Well, basically I want to save my contour shape files as points or areas, that way I can easily just upload them onto my own program. However, Global Mapper only seems to want to save them as lines. Is there any way to force Global Mapper to save contour map shape files as points or areas instead of lines?
Thanks
Robert

Robert,

You can turn your lines into area and/or point features using the Digitizer Tool. Simply select your lines, then right click and select the Advanced Feature Creation Options menu options to either create areas from your line(s) or points from your line(s). You will then be able to export that to an area or point shapefile.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Oh perfect! Thanks for telling me how to create points for shapefiles, that was exactly what I was trying to do. So on that note, I was cuirous on wheter or not there is a way to ensure that depth and altitude annotations/labels on these contour points can be labelled for each and every point? I have a very large map map with large amounts of countouring differences, so I need specific lables. Is there an option or menu to alter the labelling of points?
Thanks
Robert

Robert,

If I understand you correct, you want all of the labels to always display, correct? You can enable this with the option to 'Always Display All Labels' on the Vector Display tab of the Configuration dialog.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike
