Set Color Palettes for polygons

Is there a simple way to create a color table that will set the colors for polygons in a shapefile? I've done a couple of very complex maps by searching for the desired property, selecting all the found polygons, and setting the color. This can (did) entail a couple of hundred operations for something like the Geological Map of Canada. I picture creating an Excel or text file with the search attribute in one column and the color in another, linking to it, and coloring the polygons accordingly. If I decide to redesign my color palette I can redraw the maps without messy individual searches.

You can much more easily do this on the Area Styles tab of the Options dialog for the layer. You can setup attribute-based styling and even start off assigning colors to each unique instance of some attribute, then edit those colors to get the display that you want.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,
