Fill pattern between two non intersecting lines

Often when creating a geological map we like to depict open ended rock units. I'd like to draw the geology contacts using line features and somehow be able it fill-in the area between the lines with a pattern or color to denote the rock type.
A simple case would be three semi-parallel lines separated by some distance trending 045 Az with the areas between the lines representing two different rock types. The area bounded by the lines is open on both ends.
Certainly I could draw area features and fill the area but the "ends" would be closed.

Sorry...I answered my own question.
I can draw an area feature with a "null" border style and fill it with an color or fill pattern. Then with the draw line tool I can "trace" along one edge of the area and because of the great snap-to point feature drawing a line along the area boundary is simple.
