Hybrid png/jpeg web tile export

Using TMS tiles, we are creating our own tile server. However we have many layers that overlap so we need transparency, but having all these layers in PNG would waste much space considering that you only need the tiles at the edges of the layers to be in png. The rest could be in jpg.

It would be great if it was posible to add a 'hybrid' option as a tile image file format. So for example, using fill to bounds and hybrid exporting, if there is no layer underneath to fill to bounds then it is exported as PNG and that area with no layer is completly transparent. All other tiles are exported to JPG.

Thanks for reading.

I could add something like that to the todo list, but I'm not aware of any standard TMS server that would support something like that. Typically the tiles all need to be in a single format.

    Thanks,

We've built our own TMS tile server, and use silverlight as a viewing engine which allows using both png and jpeg images. This way, we save around 50% file size and speed up downloads from tile server.

For now, we're thinking of just exporting everything to JPG using a bright orange background. Then create a quick program that reads every jpg, and if it find that color background convert it to png and make transparent that specific color. Unforunately, this is an extra step which considering the huge amount of images is large amount of extra procesing time.

    Thanks for your time
